The Japanese director Hayao Miyazaki has been included in the list of the 100 most influential people of 2024 by Time magazine. This recognition comes on the heels of the global success of his latest feature film, The Boy and the Heron, an Oscar-winning animated film, highlighting the lasting impact his work has had on cinema and popular culture.

Miyazaki, a undisputed master of animation, is known for his fantastic and poetic films produced by Studio Ghibli that explore universal themes such as love, loss, environmentalism, and peace. Works like Laputa – Castle in the Sky, My Neighbor Totoro, Princess Mononoke, and Spirited Away, created over a six-decade career, are films that have captivated audiences of all ages, recognized as timeless classics.

The Time list, compiled annually by the American magazine, is a selection of the 100 individuals who, according to the editorial team, have had the most significant impact on the world. Considered a coveted milestone and a recognition of great prestige, the list includes personalities from various fields, including art, politics, business, science, sports, entertainment, and activism.

Hayao Miyazaki’s inclusion in the Time list was accompanied by a text written for the occasion by Guillermo del Toro. The Mexican director of films like Hellboy, Pinocchio, and The Shape of Water, explains the uniqueness and importance of Miyazaki’s films, mentioning that they evoke unparalleled fantastic beauty while realistically addressing themes like greed, war, and human anger.

Guillermo del Toro praises Miyazaki as a unique and genuine creator, calling him the most influential director in the history of animation and one of his top ten storytellers in all forms of visual media: «His work is completely authentic. He is a one-of-a-kind author who pours his entire being into his art. In the history of animation, he stands out as the most influential director. He is also one of my top ten storytellers in all visual media.»
