DC Comics has chosen not to publish and to replace a series of variant covers created by the Chinese artist Daxiong (pseudonym of Jingxiong Guo) scheduled for June, following speculations on social media that they were generated using artificial intelligence.
The covers, created by Daxiong for Power Girl 10, Wonder Woman 10, and Shazam 12, have been respectively replaced by new works by Dave Johnson, Dan Panosian, and Cully Hamner.
Daxiong stated in an interview that he did not use artificial intelligence to create the covers and does not use it in general, explaining, «DC Comics and I have considered changing the covers because the images, deemed controversial, could impact sales. This does not mean it is evidence that they were created with artificial intelligence.»
«I did not use artificial intelligence, but I am an author hurt by this witch hunt,» added Daxiong. «I have been working in this industry for over thirty years, and my drawings have always been made by hand in a traditional way. However, I am not against artificial intelligence; I think it belongs to the field of science. It does not concern me, and in reality, the development of artificial intelligence has nothing to do with me, but I am grateful that artificial intelligence can provide me with accurate translations.»
DC Comics’ decision was also made following similar checks on the works of Andrea Sorrentino on the story Joker: Year One, published in the Batman series, currently under investigation by the publisher after the author was accused on social media of using artificial intelligence to create some drawings.
